Following on from a successful premiere season in 2018 in Denmark, not yet it’s difficult and cohnartist productions are very pleased to present the Australian premiere of meaninglessness before its return season in Denmark later this year.
Directed and co-written by David Pledger, meaninglessness follows the story of renowned Australian jeweller and artist, Su san Cohn, who takes us on a personal and professional journey
through the 20th C to the present-day as she strives to answer the pressing question: how can one behave pro-actively when one’s government operates on values that are hostile to their own?
Using object, image, spoken word and design, meaninglessness was created in response to the 2016
Danish Jewellery Legislation, which allowed border authorities to confiscate ‘non-sentimental’
jewellery from people seeking asylum in order to meet the costs of their upkeep in Denmark.
Reflecting on similarities between Denmark and Australia’s asylum-seeker policies, Cohn engages
the audience in a conversation about the social, political, and historical context of jewellery as a way to navigate the troubled politics surrounding displaced peoples, offering up her own quietly subversive antidote to society’s anxiety about the stranger, the newcomer, the other.
David Pledger is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist, writer, curator and activist.
